Chronological Resumes

Chronological resumes are the most popular resume format. When first learning how to write a resume, it's likely that you're taught how to write it in a chronological format. In these types of resumes, your work history is listed in reverse chronological order, from most recent to least recent. Under each previous employer and job title, will be a short summary of your duties and achievements while holding each position. A chronological resume is essentially a career summary of the individual it is highlighting.

Functional Resumes

While functional resumes are less common than chronological resumes, they can still be very useful. In functional resumes, rather than simply listing your experience and work history in reverse chronological order as you would in a chronological resume, you list your experience and work history in order of relevancy. The position listed at the top of a functional resume could be from years ago, as long as it is most relevant to the position you are applying for and best highlights your skills. Still, like chronological resumes, under each previous employer and job title will be a short summary of your duties and achievements while holding each position. A functional resume showcases the career highlights of an individual.

Which Type of Resume is Better?

It all depends on the individual the resume is highlighting.

Chronological Resumes are good for:

- Recent graduates (with relevant work experience in their chosen field)
- Individuals whose work history shows progressive increases in responsibility
- Individuals applying to a position that will feature an internal job search
- Applying for executive or senior positions
- Individuals who have worked for a number of impressive companies

Functional Resumes are good for:

- Recent graduates (without relevant work experience in their chosen field)
- Individuals with gaps in their employment history
- Individuals who have frequently changed jobs
- Individuals changing careers
- Individuals who don't fit the exact mold of the position they're applying for
