The Association of Black Social Workers at Wayne State University

A student organization within the School of Social Work at Wayne State University, The Association of Black Social Workers (ASBW), is committed to serving its communities. Their goal is to encourage a positive shift within environments where marginalized individuals often don't have a voice. The ASBW conducts community service and educational and research activities with a focus on individuals of color.

The Association of Black Social Workers' Social Justice Forum

The second annual Social Justice Forum took place on Thursday, February 22, 2018, at Wayne State University from 4-7p.m. The program's agenda included an introductory statement from Michanda Gant and the rest of the ABSW team, a moderated panel discussion, audience questions for the panel, and concluded with a mix and mingle.

The goal of this year's Social Justice Forum was to create an environment in which the academic community could engage in meaningful dialogue with community leaders who have committed to advocating for social action, social change and social justice. The forum aimed to bridge the gap between the academic and living communities of metro-Detroit by discussing the issues affecting the local African American youth.

ABC Solutions, Inc. and its President Tim Gibson were fortunate enough to be invited by Michanda Gant, the President of the Wayne State University Association of Black Social Workers Student Organization, to speak as a panelist at their second annual Social Justice Forum. In addition to Tim, the panel was comprised of the Director of APEX Scholars Dr. Mark Jackson, entrepreneur and former Fox 2 News Anchor Anqunette Sarfoh, social work student and U-Link advocate Alan Johns, and Moderator Dr. Takisha LaShore. Special guest Jasmine Brockman, the Organizer for the African People's Revolutionary Party, was also present.

Over the course of the two-hour forum discussion, numerous positive strides were made. Individuals of all walks of life were able to come together and voice their opinions while discussing various polarizing issues. The forum created an open dialogue between non-profits and schools in which partnerships for the betterment of the community will be made. Additionally, the forum provided a great opportunity for networking, giving time for attendees to make new connections and exchange contact information. Unanswered questions from Wayne State's ASBW Social Justice Forums are sure to result in additional forums where these issues can be further discussed.
